I would like to talk with you today about the Second Harvest Food Bank, and what they do. The Second Harvest Food Bank is private non-for-profit organization that collects and redistributes donated
food to more than 500 non-for-profit agencies in 6 counties: Seminole, Orange, Osceola, Volusia, Lake, and my county, Brevard. On the average, there are more 55,000 people that benefit from SHFBCF each week---that is a lot in my opinion! Here's another fact to make you think---approximately 1 in 5 in our population , 732,000 people needed food assistance in Central Florida last year. Now, do those numbers cut close to home? Considering that quite a few people in Brevard County lost their jobs due to various industries closing, they could be among the many who rely on food from SCHFBCF.
Where does the money go, you ask? They put all donations to work through a variety of programs, including: Collections and distribution of food, food stamp application assistance, Childhood Hunger (Hi-Five Kids Pack ,Kids Cafe), Second Helpings--prepared and perishable food, Fresh Produce, Disaster Relief. For every $1 donated, up to $9 worth of grocery product is provided to those in need, and 96% of every dollar goes straight to feeding people.
47% of the clients served are children. 20% of the households served have at least one member age 65 or older. (Wow.) 33% of households served have at least one working adult.
At the CFLBlogCon tomorrow, there will be a raffle for the basket that SCHFBCF has donated. The basket includes: a 3 day/2 night stay in a 2-bedroom villa at any Westgate Resort (excluding Westgate South Beach), a $25 gift card for Elephant Bar, 2 GA Wine Women & Shoes Tickets (There isn't a set date for next year yet), a pair of stemless wine glasses (with Second Harvest and Wine Women & Shoes logo), and a Second Harvest Food Bank t-shirt!
The suggested donation is $10 a raffle ticket. The raffle ends at 5pm tomorrow. Enclosed is a link in which you can donate for a raffle ticket or so. Donation for raffle tickets
